Adjustment Disorders

Life is full of changes—some exciting, some difficult, and some completely unexpected. While most people experience stress when adjusting to a new situation, an adjustment disorder occurs when the stress becomes overwhelming and interferes with daily life. Adjustment disorders can develop in response to major life changes such as starting a new school or job, moving, the loss of a loved one, a breakup, or becoming a new parent.

Adjustment disorders are temporary but can feel just as intense as anxiety or depression. You may feel stuck, hopeless, or unable to cope with the transition. The good news is that with the right support, adjustment disorders are highly treatable, and most people recover within months.
